Just got back from a camping trip at the panther creek campground and my family and I loved it! It was in the perfect spot because you’ve got falls creek falls, falls creek cave, panther creek falls, and the PCT all in very close range as well as a store right down the road to get ice for the coolers! It you want a very beautiful, active, and peaceful camping trip, plan one here! In August there is also Thomas Lakes and Panther Creek to go swimming in. Scott… Do you know of any REALLY good backpacking trips on the north side of Mount Hood? My dad and I are want to go backpacking in the area but we want a very pristine and some-what quiet trip. Not anything too secluded but also not a super highway of backpackers. We were thinking about Eagle Creek to Wahtum Lake and then down the PCT to Ruckel Creek. What do you think?
I just visited Panther Creek Falls today and it kicked ass. It’s easy to get jaded with so many gorgeous waterfalls around, but this one really delivers. Also, the sign for the trail IS up for now. It’s still easy to miss though. Follow the directions in the book and then look for the sign on the right hand side of the road. The trail isn’t very big so hopefully the sign remains intact.
Update to Panther Creek Falls. The book’s directions are spot on. However as of this writing Feb. 2015, there is no sign for the actual trail. But someone spraypainted “P.C. Falls” in blue paint on the blacktop right in front of where the trail starts. I didn’t actually see it on the way down, but found the trail easily with the directions in the book. Getting down to the base of the falls is a major and difficult scramble that anybody should seriously think twice about attempting before they do it – you might be able to get down, but you may not be able to get back up!
